Mission Statement Gaining Ground

Gaining Ground is an intervention/prevention program in Houston, Texas for adults troubled and At Risk youth who have difficulties or are at risk of becoming violent offenders, drug/alcohol dependent, truant, juvenile delinquent, recidivism, gang affiliated, suicidal and disadvantaged.

We are dedicated to empowering troubled youth in the communities to ensure that they have a chance at a healthy start and future. Our programs will provide comprehensive and innovative programs that will challenge these individuals to envision and learn to navigate a course that can be rewarding and characterized by achievement.

Gaining Ground will help and assist in transforming the lives of youth and adults by involving qualified life coaches/mentors, individual case management, afterschool activities, homework assistance, recreational activities, citywide and community involvement, anger/domestic violence facilitating, life skills and self-esteem building.

The Gaining Ground Director and Founder, Dale Ray Smith is dedicated to reducing the impulsiveness of High Risk and Aggressive behavior in youth and adults. He is currently a facilitator at Houston/Humble High Schools, Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Harris County Juvenile Detention Centers. He is also a Chaplain, Certified Anger Management and Domestic Violence Facilitator, Consultant, Motivational Speaker and author of his book “To Hell and Back”.

Our program is committed to increasing youth’s social and emotional competence along with protective factors designed in helping them to become strong and healthy so they can began to make productive and positive contributions to our society.

THE TOLL OF DRUG ADDICTION AND MENTAL ILLNESS

I want to write about a subject that’s close to my heart. I have a daughter that suffers from mental illness her diagnosis is Paranoid Schizophrenia along with a drug addiction to Crack Cocaine. Due to her dual diagnosis it has made it extremely hard to reach her.

BULLYING
 
 I can remember coming up in San Francisco, California, my younger siblings and I had to walk to school, it was at least 2 miles from our house.It was a group of guys always standing in our way as we trotted along they always stop us and took our lunch money.
They slapped me and my brothers and said you better not tell anybody.

RESPECTING WOMEN         

I’ve seen so many men out there who have no respect for women, much less for their own wife or girlfriend. I have issues with this especially because I watched my step father beat my mother everyday hitting her even with belts and extension cords.
